The UK Political System The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is Constitutional Monarchy (Parliamentary Monarchy). Britain doesn’t have a written constitution. The Queen or King is the head of the state. The power is hereditary, not elective. The Queen or King reigns but doesn’t rule. The present Sovereign is Queen Elizabeth II. She was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1953. Power in the country belongs to Parliament. Parliament is the most important authority in Britain, its Supreme legislative body. It is responsible for British The British Parliament consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords is not elected, the power is hereditary. The House of Lords The House of Commons consists of Members of Parliament. The House of Commons is elected by the people(650 seats ).
